I love my brushes and I want to take care of them but I don't know what the best technique is, some people say to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. While others say to use a baby shampoo. I've even heard of people using a mild dish soap. Then drying them is a different story some say to hang the brushes upside down while some say to lay them flat on a paper towel overnight. What works best for you? All your input is appreciated. What is the best way to clean %26amp; maintain make-up brushes?
I use baby shampoos because I know that there aren't any harsh chemicals in them (think: no more tears).
Wet your hands with lukewarm water and drop a small amount into the center of your palm. Gently swirl the brush into the shampoo, creating a lather. You should see a lot of the makeup coming out. Rinse under running water. If your brush is really dirty, (I find brushes I use for eyeliner and lip liner get pretty caked with makeup,) repeat this step.
In terms of how the brushes should be dried, I believe this is the most important step. Take a towel and gently squeeze out any excess water. Now, to try and maintain the brushes shape, I brush the back of my hand so that the bristles are all going the way they should be. At this point I'll lay the shaped brush on a towel to finish drying. (Overnight is good.)
If you're hard pressed for time, Sephora makes brush cleansing wipes. You brush back and forth on the pre-moistened wipe to clean the brush. It dries a few seconds after. I recommend this only if you are in a pinch for time. What is the best way to clean %26amp; maintain make-up brushes?
i usually just throw them out.. and get new ones every month or so.. i like em fresh :P
If you have good quality brushes (bristles don't fall out easily/handles don't break), mild shampoo or dish soap works fine. I use warm water and dish soap and swirl the brush in the palm of my hand, rinse, gently squeeze excess water out with a soft towel or washcloth, then lay flat on the towel to dry making sure bristles aren't fanned out, then when dry you can fluff it out by swirling it on a dry towel. There is no need for conditioner.
I wash mine with a clarifying shampoo (Pantene %26amp; Herbal Essences make good ones). The idea is to strip away all the residue (makeup, oil, etc.) so you want a shampoo that is formulated to do that. I suppose dish soap would also work but I've never tried it. I always lay mine flat on a paper towel and they are still in the same shape as when I bought them. It's more convenient to dry them flat as well.
Being a make up artist in the past, and still continuing to use some of the best all natural brushes available, here's what I do, and has constantly worked for me. Simply. Luke warm water (helps breakdown build up with out melting the glue holding it all together), mild hand soap (antibacterial soft soap is what i use)
-put a little dab of soap in your palm, move your brush around until you have some good lather, rinse and repeat until your water runs clear.
-gently squeeze the excess water out with a paper towel - lay flat on a paper towel overnight, (i do mine after i do my makeup in the morning, takes 5 min, and they're ready for me that day if i should need them again), you brushes will retain their shape, and tadaa! good to go.....hope this helps....system has worked for me for over 10 years...best to ya
Yes, use shampoo, but it does not need to be moisturizing in particular. Baby shampoo is fine. Makeup brush bristles are made from natural hairs, so you would want to use shampoo. However, for those synthetic bristle brushes that you use for liquid or cream-type makeup, the shampoo may not wash it off as effectively since it may dry and solidify a bit. In this case, I recommend to use a mild dish detergent to get them clean. For drying them, you can lay them flat on a paper towel. They will dry a little faster if you lay them at the edge of a table with only the stem part of the brushes on the table, and the bristles extended past the edge of the table.
