How often and how do you wash out make up brushes?

I'm new to all this make up stuffHow often and how do you wash out make up brushes?
You should at the least wash them once a month. I personally like to wash mine every 2 weeks though, then once a week for brushes that I use alot like my foundation brush. As for how you wash then, the best thing to do is buy a good brush cleaner (I use MAC brush cleaner, it works very well and only cost $10) . Some people clean their brushes using hair shampoo however the problem with this is it'll take your brushes longer to dry and shampoo doesn't sanitize your brushes like brush cleaner does.

Basically what you do if your using cleaner is start off by wiping off any excess makeup off your brushes. Then put a little brush cleaner in a cup or bowl, dip your brushes in the cleaner (don't let them soak or sit in there, this will mess up the hairs of the brush and clean your brushes one at a time). Then take a paper towel and wipe your brushes off on the towel. Repeat these steps this until you see that no more make up is coming off on the paper towel. after that use your fingers to lightly shape the brush hair's back into it's original shape. Then lay your brush down flat to dry.

Never leave your brushes standing up while they are wet because the moisture from the cleaner or water (if you use shampoo) can seep down into the brush and loosen up the glue that is holding the bush hairs into the handle. Thus ruining your brush over time, so always make sure to lay them down flat until they are fully dry.

You should regularly clean all your makeup brushes. I have two cleaners, for different things....

I have a spray called BrushOff (you can get it online at sephora.com or ulta.com for about $13... the bottle lasts forever!) which you spray on top of brushes used for powder makeup. It makes the makeup bead up to the top of the bristles, then you wipe them clean on a tissue... good for quick cleaning like if you are changing shadows but using the same brush, etc. Works on nonpowder makeup, too, but takes more effort. I use BrushOff 4-5 days a week, depending on what I am doing, but I have about a dozen brushes, so I always have clean spares.

The second brush cleaner I have is a liquid you mix with water... Merle Norman Conditioning Brush Cleanser (I used to work there, and the $5 bottle lasts a long time). Pour a capful into a bowl, fill with water, and swirl brushes. Rinse brushes under cool water until water runs clear, reshape, and lay flat to dry. I do this every 1-2 weekends.

MAC, Sephora, and a few other lines make a comparable, but pricier version of this. If all else fails and you can't get a brush cleaner, use antibacterial handsoap of baby shampoo to wash brushes.
i usually wash mine every 2 weeks and i use baby soap it works just as good as those makeup cleaner 4 brushes thats what a makeup artist told me
For things that touch your eyes (like mascara brushes) they should actually be washed at least once a week. This prevents growth of bacteria and prevents the little bugs (yes we have them) from being able to grow.

For shadow brushes, and for blush brushes, all the excess makeup should be ';shaken'; out with every use, and they should be cleaned (depending on use) once a month.

Lipsticks should actually never touch the lip, you should use a lipstick brush.

Compact pads and makeup applicators should be replaced once a week if you wear makeup daily.

Of course, most people dont do half of this stuff, and they are all okay, but this is what is recommended for lengthening the ';life'; of your makeup and keeping you healthy

I was my expensive brushes once a week. And the cheap ones i just use and throw out.

Honestly i would say if your new dont waste money on brushes.. just buy cheap ones they last long too. I didnt buy any of my good ones.. they were gifts so i like to take care of them.. there's basically no diffrence though ;]]
make sure that you dont clean them with the brushes upwards.. if you do it that way the glue inside will get wet and your brush will turn to mush. just soak them in a cup for a little while.. ((not above the brush line)) again to avoid taking away from the glue. and use paper towels. be very gentle with them and dont hurt the bristles too much. the make up should fall off of the brushes dont force it or you'll ruin the way that they apply... hope all this helps. email me if you have questions :)
once a week
